A contractor called out for furnace repair in St. Joseph County has to figure out what the system has actually been running against before they can say what failed and why. 233 severe weather events were recorded in St. Joseph County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing feature of operating here, not an occasional interruption, and components that carry the heating load take that punishment season after season. A heat exchanger, a pressure switch, or a draft inducer that has been cycling hard through repeated weather events wears differently than one that has sat in mild conditions. That shapes what a contractor checks first and what they expect to find when they open the cabinet.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls and bare concrete floor, insulated flexible and sheet-metal ductwork running along exposed wood floor joists, two cardboard boxes and a coiled gray hose on the floor.

Ductwork in houses this old was put in for equipment that no longer exists, and what replaced it, and often what replaced that. Half the homes in St. Joseph County, Indiana were built in 1968 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a furnace fails and a contractor opens it, what they find is the record of those replacements: non-original heat exchangers, adapted flue runs, parts sourced from whatever was available at the time of the last repair. Whether a given part is still manufactured is not a question the age of the house answers. The contractor has to open the unit and identify what is actually in it before a repair scope means anything.

The Parts of a Furnace a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, ceiling ductwork, a furnace unit with a tall flue pipe, and a dark shingled roof.

The heat exchanger sits at the heart of the furnace cabinet and is the first place a contractor looks when something is wrong. Cracks or stress in that metal shell let combustion gases into the air stream. The burner assembly sits just below it, and a dirty or misfiring burner is a common reason a furnace runs poorly or refuses to start.

The blower motor and its fan wheel sit in the lower section of the cabinet and push conditioned air out into the house. The inducer motor pulls combustion gases out through the flue before each heating cycle begins. The control board ties all of it together, and when signals break down between components, a contractor traces the fault back to it.

The drawing shows a typical furnace layout, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to your specific unit and situation.
